Many would say that PlayerUnknown’s Battleground (PUBG) made the “battle royale” genre popular. The game rose to popularity and gained even more momentum when they were able to release a mobile version of the game. It was clear the battle royal genre was here to stay, so Epic added their own battle royal mode to Fortnite. Mobile players weren’t excited because it was only playable on a desktop or console, but back in May of this year, Epic Games confirmed the game was coming to Android and that they were aiming for a summer release date.
So lately there has been a lot of buzz about Fortnite finally being available on Android. This is huge news because the company’s revenues for the game was climbing higher and higher. Back in March, it was reported that Fortnite had raked in close to $300 million. A month later, in May, Fornite became the highest earning free to play game with $318 during the month. The momentum doesn’t seem to be stopping either with projections that Epic Games will be able to amass $2 billion from microtransactions of Fortnight.
As we got closer to the summer months people started wondering where the Fortnite port was for Android. Finally, yesterday during the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 event, Fortnite for Android was made official. It’s a Samsung exclusive for 3 days but will be available for more devices after that. However, as the rumors stated, it is not available in the Play Store. And Google wants to make sure people know that.
You know that cheap clones of the game are going to pop up by the hundreds in the Play Store, but Google is actually doing something to help those who aren’t aware of what’s going on. If you search for “Fortnite” on the Play Store you will be greeted with a message saying “Fortnite Battle Royal by Epic Games, Inc is not available on Google Play.” That still won’t stop the clones from showing up, but it’s a nice measure that should hopefully prevent a few disappointed users.
