With LineageOS being one of the most “commercial”-like custom ROMs out there, there are a number of steps that have been taken in the interest of user safety and professionalism, one of which has been the disabling of root access by default. Official builds of LineageOS do not come with pre-enabled root access, and the developers have also stated that they will not circumvent SafetyNet restrictions imposed by Google by modifying the kernel image. There are absolutely no problems with you flashing either Magisk or SuperSU, but both are solutions which aim to work on as many custom ROMs and devices as possible. In an effort to give users more choice, and potentially more stability, AddonSU packages are now available for LineageOS 15.1 which let you get root access.
AddonSU can only be flashed on LineageOS based ROMs. All it does is simply enable root access on your phone in an officially supported way. What’s more, there are also zip files you can use to remove AddonSU packages just by flashing the removal zip for your device’s architecture, as there are ARM and ARM64 packages. Not only does this mean you can root your phone through an official method, but also custom ROM developers could, in theory, package root access into their unofficial builds of LineageOS. This would then negate the need for people to use Magisk or SuperSU if they wanted root access.
This root solution isn’t one that would interest many since you won’t be able to pass SafetyNet, but it’s convenient to flash and also guaranteed to work with the official builds. Another use case may be when you’re using a device that, for whatever reason, can’t use Magisk.
