Google has been preparing Chrome OS to be more like a mobile operating system. We’ve seen Google’s web-based OS get several Android features over the last few months. Google is testing an Android P-like system tray, in-line notification replies, touch-friendly launcher, floating keyboard, and more. These features will be very important when the first Chrome OS tablet launches next month.
The next feature in Google’s web-based OS’ growing portfolio of mobile features is video recording. You may be surprised to find out it was impossible to record videos with the default Chrome OS camera app. Chrome evangelist François Beaufort announced the new feature on Google+. There is a new “Switch to record video” button in version 5.0.0 of the Camera app (shown above). Videos are saved locally in the gallery.
Recording videos might seem like a small thing, but it’s often the little things that complete the package. If Google wants their web-based OS to be viable for tablets, it will need all the things that make Android better suited for mobile devices. Right now, it works great on devices with keyboards in traditional computer situations. The Acer Chromebook tablet is launching next month. There is still work to be done to make it ready for full touchscreen devices.
