Samsung first started the “Plus” line of Galaxy S variants with the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ in 2015. Since then, every new Galaxy S device has been accompanied by a larger model (though the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge didn’t have the “+” attached). A new report from The Bell suggests Samsung will retire the Plus devices after the Samsung Galaxy S10+ in favor of the Galaxy Note series.
This move would make sense for a lot of reasons. The Plus devices have been inching toward the size of the Note devices. For example, the Samsung Galaxy S9+ has a 6.2-inch display, while the Samsung Galaxy Note 8‘s is 6.3-inches. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to have two devices with nearly identical specs and size. The main difference is, of course, the S Pen in the Note series.
Money is also a factor in this decision, unsurprisingly. The report states that merging the devices would “defeat” the struggling profits that we recently wrote about. Samsung is putting money into two separate devices that have a lot of overlap. It makes sense from every angle to combine the two. Especially after this year, when the Samsung Galaxy S10 is rumored to be bigger than the Galaxy Note 9.
According to the report, this is not a done deal yet. Samsung has been mulling over the decision for the last year or more. Personally, I think it would be wise for Samsung to do it. They could simplify their lineup and cut costs at the same time. There’s no reason why someone who prefers the Plus devices couldn’t use a Note instead. Even if you don’t like the S Pen, it’s not something you have to use. It sits out of the way unless you need it. What do you think about this? Should Samsung get rid of the Plus models?
