There have been rumblings of new Sony phones for a while now, and a few of them are rumored to be announced at Mobile World Congress 2018 (MWC) in Barcelona later this month. Now, more information has been revealed about the company’s forthcoming lineup, including a full list of specs and even a prototype image of the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact.
Sony has been coy in the run-up to its MWC press conference, yesterday releasing a video hinting at a curved device.

The company isn’t playing around when it comes to specs, but according to the report from Swedish publication Swedroid, Sony has taken a number of design decisions which veer from the path of its previous handsets. For one, the Xperia XZ2 and Xperia ZX2 Compact don’t have 3.5mm headphone jacks, and secondly, the fingerprint sensors have been moved to the back of both phones (like the Sony Xperia XA2 and the Xperia L2).
Interestingly, the report mentions that the Xperia XZ2 will use a vibration motor for playing music and audio, but it’s unclear how it’ll work in practice. (It could be akin to UK audio startup Redux’s in-screen speaker technology.)
As for raw specifications, both smartphones will feature Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipsets, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. The larger variant will have a 5.7-inch 18:9 display, while the Compact’s FHD+ (2160 x 1080) screen will measure 5 inches while maintaining a similar body size compared to previous 4.6-inch Xperia Compact devices. Both phones will sport a Gorilla Glass 5 coating to protect against scratching.
There’s no information on the battery capacity of either phone yet, but Sony devices have long been praised for their long battery lives. There is also no information on the camera.
The Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact are expected to launch on March 6, with the Sony Xperia XZ2 retailing for 7990 kr ($987). The smaller Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact will cost 5990 kr ($740).
